Info

8:30 is the tenth album of the jazz fusion group Weather Report issued in 1979 by ARCColumbia Records. The album rose to Nos. 3 & 47 on the Billboard Jazz Albums and Billboard 200 charts respectively. 8:30 also won a Grammy Award for Best Jazz Fusion Performance. The album takes its name from the band's habit of starting their performance at 8:30 pm. At the time of the tour, the band was a quartet and would take the stage continuously for around two and a half hours, each of the members taking a solo. Weather Report is generally regarded as the greatest jazz fusion band of all time, with the biggest jazz hit Birdland from the best jazz fusion album 1977's Heavy Weather. But the group's studio mastery sometimes overshadows the fact that it was also a live juggernaut - so don't overlook the outstanding live and studio album from 1979, 8:30. This was a rare quartet version of Weather Report, with co-leaders in keyboardist Joe Zawinul and saxophonist Wayne Shorter. I saw Weather Report in two concerts to promote the album that featured three sides recorded live and one side of studio work. It was at a point where the band was at its commercial height, but not letting the burden of popularity weigh the group down that was to come later when Joe Zawinul sacked Jaco Pastorius, as the great bassist began to succumb to his personal demons. Though I bought the 5 CD original master set recently, 8:30 is one of those albums that I return to, because maybe, it encapsulates the best of Weather Report. Not all their best work, obviously, that wouldn't be possible but the range of moods, tempos and compositions really do show them at their best. Album 1971 8 Songs. Weather Report Weather Report
