The Four Seasons Italian: Le quattro stagioni is a group of four violin concerti by Italian composer Antonio Vivaldi, each of which gives musical expression to a season of the year. They were written around 17161717 and published in 1725 in Amsterdam, together with eight additional concerti, as Il cimento dell'armonia e dell'inventione The Contest Between Harmony and Invention. Following the death of its founder in I960, the Zimbler Sinfonietta was re- organized and George Zazofsky was appointed its permanent Musical Director. The Chamber Orchestra Society of Philadelphia has recently honored this group by requesting a performance in its series for next season to be given at the Academy of Music. Album 1962 12 Songs. The Four Seasons Italian: Le quattro stagioni is a set of four violin concertos by Antonio Vivaldi. Composed circa 1720, The Four Seasons is Vivaldi's best-known work, and is among the most popular pieces in the Baroque music repertoire. The texture of each concerto is varied, a descriptive basis for his Four Seasons, Vivaldi took four Sonnets, apparently written by himself. Each of the four sonnets is expressed in a concerto, which in turn is divided into three phrases or ideas, reflected in the three movements fast-slow-fast of each concerto. The published scores by Estienne Roger of Amsterdam in 1725 are marked to indicate which musical passages are representative of which verses of the sonnet. It is advisable, at least during the first few hearings, to follow the sonnets and music together, for they are bound up with one another to an extent rarely heard. The texture of each concerto is varied, each resembling its respective season. For example, Winter is peppered with silvery pizzicato notes from the high strings, calling to mind icy rain, whereas Summer evokes a thunderstorm in its finalmovement, which is why. Jaime Laredo.
