Jazz pianist Thelonious Monk's first sessions as a bandleader were recorded between 1947 and 1952, and released on Blue Note records as a series of 78 RPM singles. These singles were then compiled in later years-with additional performances from the sessions-into long-playing album formats. As Monk's reputation and fame grew, the sessions were recompiled again and again into more complete configurations. This article details various releases of these sessions. Since these were Monk's first opportunities to lead his own recording dates, this set includes the original versions of such classics as Ruby, My Dear, Well You Needn't, Off Minor, In Walked Bud, Evidence, Criss Cross and Straight No Chaser along with Monk's first chance to record 'Round Midnight and Epistrophy. Monk's Complete Blue Note Recordings isare an excellent set of CD's, both educational about an important phase of development in jazz history, and enjoyable from the standpoint of simply listening to some wonderful performances. The only drawback about this set of four CD's is that some of them contain unavoidable technical flaws, given the fact that they were made in the late 1940's. Thelonious Monk grew up in New York, started playing piano when he was around five, and had his first job touring as an accompanist to an evangelist. He was inspired by the Harlem stride pianists James P. Johnson was a neighbor and vestiges of that idiom can be heard in his later unaccompanied solos. Fortunately, Alfred Lion of Blue Note believed in him and recorded Monk extensively during 1947-1948 and 1951-1952. In 1956 came the classic Brilliant Corners album, but it was the following year when the situation permanently changed
