The Rolling Stones: Out of Our Heads Revisited. Anthony DeCurtis considers the historical significance of the Stones fourth record. Anthony DeCurtis. To make the album, the Stones returned in May 1965 to Chess Studios, in Chicago, home of their blues idols and the place where the Stones themselves had recorded parts of 12 5 the year before. They completed Out of Our Heads at sessions in Hollywood and London. Like its three predecessors. Out of Our Heads draws heavily on the work of American R&B musicians who were all but unknown to white teenagers both in this country and in the United Kingdom. In 1965, the Stones finally proved themselves capable of writing classic rock singles that mined their R&Bblues roots, but updated them into a more guitar-based, thoroughly contemporary context. The first enduring Jagger-Richards classics are here - The Last Time, its menacing, folky B-side Play With Fire, and the riff-driven Satisfaction, which made them superstars in the States and defined their sound and rebellious attitude better than any other single song. With their Out Of Our Heads album, The Rolling Stones penned their first truly classic song and found themselves thrust into the mania of global stardom. The Rolling Stones started out as a blues band in 1962, playing small venues such as The Ealing Club in London, and by the summer of 1965 they were one of the most popular bands in the UK. On 29 July that year, the Stones visited Deccas offices in London to sign a new recording contract. They had been with the label for two years and had already justified the faith placed in them by A&R man Dick Rowe
