Steve Reich born 1936 is undoubtedly one of the key figures in 20th century contemporary music and along with Terry Riley or Philip Glass one of the founding fathers of so-called minimal music. With classics like Music For 18 Musicians , Drumming or Different Trains the American composer proved himself one of a handful of living composers who can legitimately claim to have altered the direction of musical history The Guardian. Four Organs and Phase Patterns come from a time when minimalist composer Steve Reich was in an obsessively scientific mode. They establish a new language, while arguing for their very right to exist. Unlike some other famous works by the minimalist pioneer Steve Reich, Four Organs is not the least bit soothing. It doesnt murmur or churn it squawks, sort of, digging into your nerves like a hangnail: Stop, stop, I confess, someone reportedly wailed at the works premiere. A concertgoer rapped her shoe on the stage at the same performance, like Khrushchev at the 1960 United Nations General Assembly. Steve Reich has described his 1971 piece Four Organs as an attempt to reproduce the phasing effect of his mid-'60s tape pieces such as Come Out and It's Gonna Rain with real musicians in a concert setting. Four organists including on this 1974 recording, both Reich himself and his friend Philip Glass repeatedly play single notes, aided by the superhuman efforts of a maracas player who's providing an unaccented beat at a steady tempo. Four Organs is a work for four electronic organs and maraca, composed by Steve Reich in January 1970. The four organs harmonically expound a dominant eleventh chord EDEFGAB, dissecting the chord by playing parts of it sequentially while the chord slowly increases in duration from a single 18 note at the beginning to 200 beats at the end. The process of increased augmentation is accomplished first by causing notes to sustain after the chord, and then notes start anticipating the chord.
