Steve Earle has released an album every two or so years since getting sober in the mid-Nineties. Thats inevitably led to a mixed bag of results, from the inspired 2009s Townes Van Zandt tribute Townes to the less compelling 2015s blues genre exercise Terraplane. From a narrative standpoint, Earles latest record, Ghosts of West Virginia, is likely the most tightly focused and thematically driven collection of the songwriters career. The songs on Ghosts feel mostly like a summation of the sounds and styles Earle has made his trademark since edging away from the country marketplace and towards singer-songwriter folk in the late Nineties. Earle's well-documented addiction to heroin and cocaine was spiraling out of control in 1990 while he was holed up in Memphis recording The Hard Way. Even his songwriting, usually peerless, wasn't at its best here, with When the People Find Out, Regular Guy, and Justice in Ontario sounding like they were tossed together fast to round out the album the latter sounds like a transparent stroke to his Canadian fan base, where Copperhead Road went multi-platinum. When the People Find Out. This song is by Steve Earle and appears on the album The Hard Way 1990. Steve Earle's latest album pulls no punches in its survey of the American social landscape. The low highway of the title track is a sort of hardship highway travelled by the underclass. It's Springsteen territory, occupied with pride in songs like 21st Century Blues and the elegiac closer Remember Me. In between, Earle essays accordion-driven Tex-Mex boogie on That All You Got , and jaunty Western swing on Love's Gonna Blow My Way. But the most mordant track has to be Burnin' It Down , where he evokes the desperation of those crushed by corporate interests. The Hard Way is the fourth studio album by Steve Earle backed by The Dukes, released in 1990. It was dedicated to Emilio Lorenzo Ensenat 1930-90.
