Spyro Gyra's first album for MCA after their longtime label, GRP-Crescendo, was absorbed into its corporate parent, 1990's Fast Forward carries the curious band subtitle featuring Jay Beckenstein. Saxophonist Beckenstein has certainly always been the band's leader, writing a good chunk of the material and producing the albums, but given that the lineup is basically unchanged from the previous few Spyro Gyra albums, the new nomenclature is puzzling. It also goes against Spyro Gyra's entire musical aesthetic, as the group's unabashedly commercial and melodic. Written-By Jay Beckenstein. Fast Forward CD, Album, Promo. MCA Records. WMC5-143. While Spyro Gyra has been seen mostly as being on the softersmoother side of jazz for their entire career, if you're more of a jazz fan than a pop fan, their first album seems to be the only offering that they made to the jazz world. Their record sales prove that there are a lot of folks out there that really like the formula that they've been using after this record, but more records like this one would have given them certainly more respect in the jazz world as opposed to the music industry. Primo lavoro di Jay Beckenstein & C. della fine degli anni settanta. Pietra angolare del genere, sviluppata al meglio negli album successivi. Da tenere in considerazione. In 1990, MCA's jazz roster was absorbed by GRP, so Spyro Gyra switched labels, releasing Fast Forward, their first album for GRP, later that year.
