Two heavy, fast paced and muscular numbers keep the interest at its peak, Inner Unrest and Launder the Conscience , until the lingering and atmospheric Portrait closes the proceedings with layered vocals, tasteful guitar work, and a strong sense of accomplishment the band sounds invigorated and seems to be on an upward trend. Compared to the recent efforts of the Todds era or the resurgence era, the return of the true Queensrÿche , The Verdict has a more organic flow than Queensrÿche and Condition Hüman. Its perhaps darker and heavier, and it feels like a better crafted collection of songs, without diminishing their predecessors. As one of the pioneers of American heavy and progressive metal, Queensrÿches early output contains some of the most beloved albums in the genre. However, their work in the late 1990s and especially the 2000s was met with less than favorable feedback, so its not surprising that many listeners were pleased when original vocalist Geoff Tate was replaced by former Crimson Glory singer Todd La Torre in 2012. Indeed, the bands first two efforts with La Torre-2013's Queensrÿche and 2015's Condition Human-received praise for feeling reinvigorated and reminiscent of the troupes former g

Decent third opus with Todd La Torre

Released in 2019, THE VERDICT is the fifteenth studio album by Queensryche (counting their self-titled debut EP) and the third with singer Todd La Torre. Speaking of Todd, he plays drums on this platter while Scott Rockenfield is on hiatus and he’s more than serviceable.

This is a solid album from beginning to end with the haunting feel for which Queensryche is known and very little, if any, of the pedestrian experimental pop rock that former singer Geoff Tate tried to incorporate into their sound, e.g. HEAR IN THE NOW FRONTIER (1997) and DEDICATED TO CHAOS (2011). THE VERDICT is a mix of Queensryche’s 80’s material and latter-day stuff, like AMERICAN SOLDIER (2009), but without that album’s lame elevator music acoustic sound (other than that cavil, AMERICAN SOLDIER is a worthy opus).

Songs like “Inside Out” and “Dark Reverie” have that dark moody vibe of “A Dead Man’s Words.” Interestingly, both “Dark Reverie” and the following cut, “Bent” share the same line: “We all fall down.” Speaking of “Bent,” it’s one of the more memorable tracks. “Light Years” is another favorite, which contains some qualities of early Warrior Soul, but in a Queensryche context.

While THE VERDICT can’t compare to the self-titled debut (1983), THE WARNING (1984) or OPERATION MINDCRIME (1988), it’s superior to OPERATION MINDCRIME II (2006) and at least as good as AMERICAN SOLDIER. This is the kind of music I want to hear from this band, not HEAR IN THE NOW FRONTIER and DEDICATED TO CHAOS. They just need to include better hooks, like on their song “The Chase,” for example.

The ten tracks clock-in at 44 minutes.
