My Bloody Valentine. Isn't Anything. Bilinda Butcher, Kevin Shields. Isn't Anything is the debut studio album by English-Irish rock band My Bloody Valentine, released on 21 November 1988 by Creation Records. Its innovative guitar and production techniques consolidated the experimentation of the band's preceding EPs, and would make it a pioneering work of the subgenre known as shoegazing. Songs in album My Bloody Valentine - Isn't Anything 1988. My Bloody Valentine - Soft As Snow But Warm Inside. My Bloody Valentine - Lose My Breath. My Bloody Valentine - Cupid Come. My Bloody Valentine - When You Wake You're Still In A Dream. My Bloody Valentine - No More Sorry. My Bloody Valentine - All I Need. My Bloody Valentine - Feed Me With Your Kiss. My Bloody Valentine - Sueisfine. Isn't Anything is the debut full-length studio album by My Bloody Valentine, released in November 1988 on Creation Records. After the band's original vocalist Dave Conway left in 1987, to be replaced by Bilinda Butcher, the band continued for a while in their previous noisy indie-pop style before Kevin Shields returned to their avant-garde roots, and began to explore the possibilities offered by the studio facilities available after signing to Creation Records in 1988. The first fruits of this experimentation was the singleEP You Made Me Realise, released in July 1988, w. Album 1988 12 Songs. Isnt Anythings unstable combination of gentle and ferocious elements is the key to this innovation. Even on songs as assaultive as Feed Me with Your Kiss or the Sonic Youth-worthy Sueisfine, the bands knack for psych-pop melodies, along with Bilinda Butcher and Kevin Shields blissed-out vocals, is somehow strong enough to weather Shields constantly surging maelstrom of reverb, effects, and feedback. Isn't Anything captures My Bloody Valentine's revolutionary style in its infancy and points the way to Loveless, but it's far more than just a dress rehearsal for the band's moment of Bloody Valentine's output during the band's miracle years between 1988 and 1991 still feels like a gift. In addition to new masters of Isn't Anything and Loveless, there's also a new My Bloody Valentine release, of a sort. EPs 1988-1991 collects four EPs and a single issued during the bands creative peak, along with previously unreleased but widely bootlegged tracks. This release provides the greatest revelation. This record is brilliant and this pressing is beautiful. No noise on mine, other than then intended noises ;)
Sadaron above the Gods
I can't believe this edition is going to end up being the rarest one since is it's not only the first pressing of the reissue, but it's the only edition that will ever have the "original reissue cut", since apparently the new issues of the reissue come with the Sean Magee cut. I'm glad I got this one right off the bat.

... and sold out too at mbv store! /
Tholmeena
just listened this after ordering direct from mbv records.. shocked at amount of surface noise. same with loveless. tried cleaning but noise persisted. have contacted them and awaiting response.

OK, who bought this for USD 242.63?? Does it sound better when you pay 10x the actual price? smh...

baelfire12 The first ones who ordered both the Isn't Anything and Loveless records, received (after a very very very very long wait I have to say) another record of the Isn't Anything release. This was a discarded release, the band essentially was throwing away. As with all "limited" items of this world, this copy became rare and commanded excess fees. To get it you had to have ordered online via MBV webpage and BOTH records. you didn't have to buy both. I only ordered Isn't Anything and received the extra lp

Great album but it was filthy, as others have said if you don't give it a thorough clean then you will get pops and crackles galore.

I'm also going to chime in and say my copy is really great. I clean every record I get (new or used) with a Squeaky Clean RCM using The Disc Doctor's Quick Wash Record Cleaner. A dirty record is always going to sound noisy.Overall very clean and sounds great. Getting a bit of noise near the beginning of "Nothing Much to Lose," but nothing that would turn me off from the pressing. Aside from the record itself, the album jacket is top notch. I always appreciate a good tip-on jacket, and glossy is always nice to see!Haven't listened to the bonus record yet, but I'm excited to compare the two.

do flippers not understand you can buy this from the band's website still?

Received my copy today. Cleaned it on the VPI with Disc Doctor cleaning fluid, followed by a double rinse of DISTILLED water. Quiet as can be and not a hint of surface noise. For new collectors, or for those who simply aren't aware, you should always clean your vinyl before playing. Even brand new vinyl. There is a mold release compound on every new record that can both cause extraneous noise and buildup on your stylus. Always clean and double rinse, using distilled water - not tap water, which includes minerals and impurities that can have a negative impact on your records.

For people complaining about this being a noisy pressing I suggest cleaning your discs before listening. This is a great pressing, very quiet and with much better sound than the original. Some songs had a very Lo-fi quality in all previous pressings and are significantly improved in this reissue with much more depth, low end and dynamics. Also Bilinda's vocals sound stunning. The original creation vinyl was very good but this is so much better. The improvements in songs like "When you wake", "FMWYK" and "Several girls galore" are impressive. The most ethereal songs ("No More Sorry", "All I Need") also sound very pleasing. The alternative cut is also really good but not significantly better. People rated it as better since this one tended to sound noisy, which is absolutely solved with a good cleaning.

Received my bundle with loveless today. Got the free vinyl. Amazing quality for all. Finally this day has come.
Abuseyourdna
I was going to buy this for under $50 from the mbv site, but I see I can purchase this for $100 here on discogs! Yay!

hahahha-perfect (plus nine more additional words that go here)

Finally received my preorders of “Isn’t Anything” and “Loveless”. From the comments, it looks like many have received extremely noisy copies of “Isn’t Anything”. My copy, which I’m listening to as I type this, is noise free. Super quiet pressing and rich, warm sound throughout, and very detailed. I have not cleaned mine yet but will at some point. I suspect a lot of the noise issues people are having, might be due specs of dust from inner sleeve and/or static which of course can be caused by the inner sleeve as well. I also have the 2003 reissue and this latest pressing blows it out of the water. No comparison. .
Low_Skill_But_Happy_Deagle
Anyone else get an extremely noisy pressing? If this is what it actually sounds like, then I think I prefer the 1988 Creation CD

Just received my bundle today on valentine's day :DPS: test pressing included (ordered end of january)

I also placed the pre-order bundle and still waiting.. would have been something to receive on Valentine's day..
Tat
Item arrived today! Received the extra vinyl and very pleased with the release :)
Mora
Any thoughts on how the test press sounds? Just curious.
Ces
I enjoy the test pressing much more than the offical one. Test pressing sounds stunning and very clean - no clicks, pops, surface noise whatsoever. Whereeas the offical pressing has some vinyl noises throughout play andugly inner groove distortion on the last track on each side. Really wonder why Kevin Shields preffered the other version. The test pressing is - along with the original Creation LP - my to go pressing from now on.
Zahisan
It sounds the same to me, I'm not sure why it was included.

I ordered the bundle October 2017 and received nothing. I did email them to ask why and was told they are still shipping them out. I guess what bothers me most if they didn’t ship them in order starting with the pre orders placed last summer! People who ordered a month ago received their records while many early birds are still waiting
Fordrelis
The date on mine is 6/10/17 (maybe 7/10/17 for you) so you're probably reading the 7 as July when it's really the day, not the month. October 6th is when pre-sale started.

Ok, here's my review. This is brilliant. The seperation is fantastic...I didn't anticipate it. The drums, bass and acoustic guitar parts in particular have a lot more room to breathe and come through more clearly. It's like listening to the album again for the first time and frankly, I never knew Isn't Anything was this good! This is a proper remaster...not just 'let's just compress it and make it louder'...they've actually made this thing sound better, and given it new life. An example to all!
Asyasya
I ordered a bundle too. Enjoy...it's definitely worth the wait!
Antuiserum
Thanks! I ordered a bundle. Still waiting but now I want it even more:)
Grarana
Yeah, I have it. Although I was more struck by the quality of the Isn't Anything remaster/reissue when compared to the original, the Loveless reissue is of the same very high standard. Maybe Loveless was always a little closer to perfection, so the difference was less noticeable, but the Loveless reissue sounds incredible and is noticeably more 'analog'. I would definitely recommend it, even if you have an original vinyl, it is worth your money.
Made-with-Love
Hi,do you also have "Loveless" reissue and care to share your impression?
Vrion
I also got sent the 'white' version. I wonder should we create a seperate page for it?
Marad
I also received the 'FREE VINYL' alternate master in a white sleeve. My copy has some crud on A4 and A5. I haven't cleaned the disc yet, so I'm not sure it's just on the surface or something more serious. Also, the sound quality doesn't seem quite as good as Loveless: background noise between tracks is fairly pronounced. I could be imagining it, but the B side sounds cleaner overall than A. Again, I haven't run it through my cleaner yet, so it might be an issue of surface dust (both my discs had quite a lot of dust and sleeve residue on them).
Gardagar
I received my loveless/isn’t anything AAA bundle this morning (put in a pre-order for both).I have so far played Isn’t Anything once on my VPI Scout & Nagaoka MP110 cartridge. I can happily confirm that this is everything we all hoped for. The sound is smooth, natural and as appealing as any genuine analogue record in vinyl history. There is great separation in the sound which gives the recording a haunting quality. The sounds themselves seem to leap out of the mix to surprise you and capture your attention. There is a big, dramatic quality to the record - exactly what’s missing in so many modern LPs. I am waiting to open Loveless when I feel the time is right (still sitting here in its shrink) but on the basis of Isn’t Anything, we are truly onto a winner and proves that with care and effort, great records can still be made.
Shadowredeemer
My pre-ordered copy came with a "free vinyl", which is another copy of the album in a plain white sleeve. The label is lighter, and it has a copyright notice of 2016. I'm assuming this is a run of ultimately rejected remasters done a couple of years ago, and they've just thrown it in with pre-orders as a freebie curio. Anyone know for sure?
Beranyle
I just got mine today. I did a quick comparison of the first song of the free vinyl vs the official one. I thought the official sounded better. Glad I found this thread and curious to see what else we learn about it.
Ttexav
My free vinyl has i...i etched into the dead wax (side 2) - I believe this is a Sean Magee cut from Abbey Road
Hanad
Same here - would like more info! No etching either, very mysterious.
Renthadral
Hoffmanites who've compared the deadwax say it's a different cut. Kevin took the records to several different mastering studios and tried multiple pressing plants before he found the one he was happy with, according to the Rolling Stone article from November there's apparently thousands of "failed experiments" lying around
Micelhorav
I got my ‘free vinyl’ of Isn’t Anything through today. Would love more info on it!
Androlhala
I only ordered a week or so ago, but I still got the freebie. Important to note to anyone curious—this isn't a white label copy, but comes with a properly printed label, just in a different shade of brown.
Grillador
Did you order the first day? I wasnt able to get my order for a few days laterm so i doubt I'll get one
Efmprof
quoted from elsewhere - "the latest issue of Uncut with a big feature of the band. Regarding the white label of Isn't Anything, Kevin said they did hundreds of test pressings of the record, and these are now being given away with some orders."
Gadar
got the same thing through. not sure either. trying to investigate myself.
