Ludwig van Beethoven. A live set of Beethoven's symphonies is almost guaranteed to have some flaws, and as much as one may enjoy the exciting playing on this 2006 Edinburgh Festival cycle by Charles Mackerras with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra and the Philharmonia Orchestra, audio defects detract a little from the package. In the four discs with the first ensemble, there is an intermittent hiss that resembles faulty breathing or the excessive rustling of pages this is most noticeable in the softer passages of slow movements, though it is sometimes detectable in the Allegros. Beethoven: The Nine Symphonies. 4 out of 5 stars 94. Audio CD. The Mackerras set of the complete symphonies of Mozart Telarc was a major disappointment. There was joy and energy but little exploration of the many opportunities for voicing, phrasing, and inflection in the later symphonies. The recordings also suffered from excessive reverberation and tubbiness, sometimes a problem when recording at the Rudolfinum in Prague. These performances were recorded live at the 2006 Edinburgh festival. When the timpani are whacked, they really intrude on the acoustic and briefly smudge the otherwise brilliant and colorful detail. However, you can glean a good example of the general approach from the coda of the Second Symphonys finale, which is quite effective and, at the end of the day, not terribly controversial. These two new Beethoven cycles are in many respects antithetical, though to hear them in tandem is to be reminded of the tremendous interpretative diversity his music permits. Both were recorded last year. The Hyperion set derives from BBC broadcasts of Charles Mackerras's Edinburgh festival cycle and features the two UK orchestras with which he is primarily associated - the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, who play the first eight, and the Philharmonia, who take over for the Ninth.
