It is best known for the track Love Games, which became a successful jazzfunk and dancefloor hit for the band reaching number 38 on the UK pop charts. It has figured in both L42's and bassist Mark King's solo live appearances to this day. The "UK" release of this remix/long version is actually a French pressing in a UK picture sleeve, some of which came with a small "Made in UK" sticker on the picture sleeve. The record itself, (vinyl, stamper, label material and finish) is clearly a French pressing and it says so on the label. This was not the first time they did this. Same deal with the UK 12"s of Rapture / Blondie and Spasticus Autisticus / Ian Dury. They are French pressings inside UK picture sleeves, some of which came with a small "Made in UK" sticker on the picture sleeve. Anyone who is not blind can see that the actual vinyl records were pressed in France.
Jesus, I thought I had audiophile issues/tendencies... I personally couldn't give a rats tail about the material used for the centre labels- I have this release & its a brilliant clean & loud cut. As the band are from the UK, this is my preferred 12", regardless.
From a Level 42 fan's position they don't get any better than this Mike handles to vocals to perfection + keyboards and xylophone, Phil's drums as usual to die for I winder if Andy White had Phil as a hero? and Mark on Bass well says it all our own Stanley Turentine. Boons lead and rhythm just swing this along nicely. From a Discographer's point of view the pressing of POSPX 343 is a nightmare. I never received a DJ Promo copy of this and have never seen one (would have been the bulk standard Phonogram pressing with black 1 and 2 on white blanks from Walthamstow: Flexi, straight edge, and the scrim cut off centre). Why was this track punished with the vile and fugly Red-brown Painted I.E.P.s from Phonogram in France, As far as I am aware and in 30+ years have never seen a UK Polydor paper label pressing of this. So please correct me if you have got either or both UK pressings with Paper Labels.Clearly the Polygram New York USA paper label pressing leaves the French pressed IEP in the toilet as a po-pori bowl.+ the USA sonics @ 33.3 will be superior shame it didn't have the UK designed sleeve. But hey-ho a paper label over an IEP for me anytime.IEP (Integral Embossed and Painted).
I have the UK white label promo 12" and it is exactly as you describe it. You might also be interested to learn there are UK Polydor pressings of the 12" single with red Polydor company labels. These pressings came without picture sleeves and were sold in black die-cut sleeves. I have a copy. I'm a major Level 42 collector and author of the official discography book 'Level 42 - The Worldwide Visual Discography'. It took me over 30 years to find a UK pressing and it was very kindly given to me by another fan.
