Gerald Stanley Wilson September 4, 1918 September 8, 2014 was an American jazz trumpeter, big band bandleader, composer, arranger, and educator. Born in Mississippi, he was based in Los Angeles from the early 1940s. In addition to being a band leader, Wilson wrote arrangements for Duke Ellington, Sarah Vaughan, Ray Charles, Julie London, Dizzy Gillespie, Ella Fitzgerald, Benny Carter, Lionel Hampton, Billie Holiday, Dinah Washington, and Nancy Wilson. It's fitting that Mosaic was able to license Gerald Wilson's Pacific Jazz recordings rather than his earlier work from the '40s and '50s, when he was in the shadow of his compadres Ellington and Basie and Dizzy Gillespie - who he wrote for and performed with during those years. In Detroit, he studied music in high school and played with the Plantation Music Orchestra. Eventually, Wilson would write scores for Ellington, Basie, and Gillespie.
