Mighty Like A Rose is the 13th studio album by the British rock singer and songwriter Elvis Costello, released in 1991 on compact disc as Warner Brothers 26575. The title is presumably a reference to the pop standard Mighty Lak' a Rose, and although that song does not appear on the album, the words of its first stanza are quoted in the booklet of the 2002 reissue. 23 It peaked at No. 5 on the UK Albums Chart, and at No. 55 on the Billboard 200. With producers Mitchell Froom and Kevin Killen, Costello made a record with no easy entrances, even if the sparkling Beach Boys-esque The Other Side of Summer and the lovely So Like Candy would have been accessible with different production. And, certainly, production is the most notable thing about this record. Filled with clattering production, spongy bass, cardboard guitars, studio white noise, and layers upon layers of tracks, there's so much going on that it's hard to get to the core of the songs. Playboy to a Man. Sweet Pear. The usual pall of despair hangs over Mighty Like a Rose. Alison, that slut, still haunts every song, in various guises, deceitful and elusive as ever. Costello responds with contempt, longing, anger, pity, condescension and the inevitable self-doubt. Costello picked up some of these tricks from his odd-couple collaboration with Paul McCartney, whose emotional dynamics are the opposite of Costellos. The real breakthrough on the album, however, occurs in what may be the most moving song of Costellos career, the unexpectedly compelling Couldnt Call It Unexpected No. Lyrics and music converge as the heart-rendingly gorgeous melody moves to its final epiphany.
