Cerrone's first four albums yielded solid disco classics with their lush orchestration and funky percussion, all largely recorded at London's Trident Studios. For the 5th album, Cerrone went to L.A. to record with the creme of session musicians there. The result, however, was not up to par with his previous recordings. Having always relied on session singers for the vocals, Cerrone made the dire decision to take the lead vocal himself on the flagship single "Rock Me" - itself a lame and very obvious rip-off of Donna Summer's "Hot Stuff" - and not convincing at all. The title track "Angelina" is certainly better but again marred by Cerrone's terrible vocal with an equally terrible accent. Things get funkier on "Not Too Shabby" although as with the other songs, the mix just sounds dull and flat. Side 2 offers two extended cuts in the eurodisco track "Call Me Tonight" (lead vocal: Michele Aller) and arguably the set's most inspired recording, the closing track "Living On Love". Cerrone V is a mediocre effort that could have been so much greater - but things were to become even worse on Cerrone VI.
Yes, I agree with the previous review, this was way below par for Cerrone and notably due to some dubious vocals from the man himself. I recently purchased this on vinyl and it has grown on me considerably. I still hate the "Hot Stuff" arrangement of "Rock Me", (Thought it was going to be an ABBA cover!) It really is poor and the cod rock-disco sound just doesn't work and sounds thin and weedy, certainly not helped by the appalling vocals. The title track " Angelina' doesn't fare much better and is only slightly improved with shared vocals and an OK tune. From here on though, things improve and the 2-track second side is almost classic Cerrone. Both songs are blatant disco. One euro, the other Santana-esque funk which builds to a terrific climax. Worth a listen first and if you're not expecting "Supernature" part 2, you may be pleasantly surprised.
