Vibraphonist Cal Tjader only recorded on the Concord label for three short years, but during that time he released six well-received albums. The Best of the Concord Years draws from that storehouse to fill two discs with choice cuts from La Onda Va Bien, Gozame Pero Ya, Heat Wave, The Shining Sea, A Fuego Vivo, and Good Vibes. Although these tracks don't follow a chronological order, the arrangements and overall flavor flow easily from composition to composition. From 1979 to his death in 1982, Cal Tjader recorded six albums for Concord. The record label created a new imprint, Concord Picante, for his Latin recordings. Concord has now released The Best Of The Concord Years, which is made up of two 55 minute CDs, comprising more than a third of Tjader's output for the label. Cal Tjader July 16, 1925-May 5, 1982 was a Latin jazz musician, though he also explored various other jazz idioms. Unlike other American jazz musicians who experimented with the music from Cuba, the Caribbean, and Latin America, he never abandoned it, performing it until his death. Tjader primarily played the vibraphone. He won a Grammy in 1980 for his album La Onda Va Bien, capping off a career that spanned over forty years. Carl Jefferson, president of Concord Records, created a subsidiary label called Concord Picante to market Latin jazz. In reality, Jefferson formed the label specifically to promote and distribute Tjader's work, whom he'd recently signed. Callen Radcliffe Tjader, Jr. ˈtʃeɪdər JAY-dər July 16, 1925 May 5, 1982 was an American Latin jazz musician, known as the most successful non-Latino Latin musician. He explored other jazz idioms, even as he continued to perform the music of Cuba, the Caribbean, Mexico and Latin America for the rest of his life. Tjader played the vibraphone primarily. He was accomplished on the drums, bongos, congas, timpani, and the piano. He worked with many musicians from several cultures. He is often linked. Mel Tormé-Hi-Fly Album Version.
