A mute space alien crash-lands his ship on Ellis Island. Other than his three-toed feet which he keeps covered, he resembles a black human man and manages to blend in with the people he encounters, engaging in lopsided conversations with various denizens of New York City. The pretext for this release was, like many other detroit techno releases from the time, to produce the most radical departure from commercial pop music. Something mindblowing and a powerful weapon in the hands of the most daring DJs. "Trance Missions" especially consists of lots of samples from AM radio modulation, something that 21st century kids probably won't know. Growing up in the 1970s and 80s, kids would be greatly influenced by watching sci fi shows on TV and listening to radio. The track is an essential reflection of this.
The vocal sample is from "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures", a text of the usual US evangelical TV/ radio priest shows. So there you have it, super heavy 909 sounds with some distortion, radio bleeping sounds, one synth line and the "TV priest". Perfect mix.
Then we have the Claude Young track "Planet Earth", with the sample most likely also taken from one of the weird religious TV shows common in the US ("there is no planet earth" is a line in one of the books of scientology).
In contrast to Dan's track, the synths play a major part here, coming from a purist minimalistic 909 beat with only the female voice sample, together creating a futuristic feel and turning into anthemic mayhem by the mid of the track. At about 2/3 of the track, there is a breakdown, also visible on the vinyl cut. The special thing here was according to one interview I read back in the day (hopefully I recall it right) that it was actually planned to make a 7" single out of the last part of this track.
The Claude Young track turned into an evergreen of early detroit techno. Like most of the label's releases, it was never repressed as the artists continued to evolve and develop their trademark sound.

The black is not black at all. It looks black. Until you hold it up to a light. Then it gives up it's secret: it's actually a nice shade of see-through amber. Yeah, it's pretty odd.

It's nearly 2017 folks and this record still has a stark and dark message...Planet planet there is no no Planet Earth! Essential and I dont mean Pete Tong...Sorry Pete.... ;) Ps repress...Is no no repress on this planet earth... Buy an original copy... Not many producers come even close to this type of Techno sound (5:10 onwards) .. ... .. ;)
