Shortly after Streetlife Serenade, Joel ditched California - and, by implication, sensitive Californian soft rock from sensitive singersongwriters - for his hometown of New York. Say Goodbye to Hollywood was a celebration of his move, a repudiation of his past, a fanfare for a new beginning, which is exactly what Turnstiles was. About Turnstiles. Joels fourth album is a homecoming album of sorts: it marks his return to his beloved New York after 3 tedious years in Los Angeles. He returns to a New York City near ruins. Crime is on the rise, the city almost crumbling amidst headlines like 'FORD TO CITY: DROP DEAD. Thus, the LP is somewhat of a concept album, one half New York, the other Los Angeles. Some songs look back towards the West Coast Say Goodbye To Hollywood, Ive Loved These Days, while others look to the uncertainty of the city and state he returns to, both with love New York State of Mind an. This is the album where Billy Joel came into his own as a singersongwritercomposer. Billy produced Turnstiles by himself, and the results were spectacular.
